Y ou don't need a ton of extras for your frst track day: no truck, no trailer, no trackside alignment rack. However, you do need to bring more than just your car. Gear up with these pieces of basic equipment and you'll be as prepared as any old pro. BEGINNER GEAR story by david s. wallens Must-Have Items for the First-Time Track Day Participant p Each brake pad compound is designed to work within a certain temperature range, and pushing things too far can lead to fade–never a good thing on track. Pagid, Hawk, Cusco, Project Mu and Porterfeld all offer track- capable pads for production cars. MSRP: budget at least $200 for a full set, but prices can vary depending on application p Get your brake fuid too hot and it, too, can fade. The end result can be a pedal that goes all the way to the foor. Wilwood, StopTech and others offer brake fuids engineered for track use. MSRP: usually $10 and up per bottle p A full racing harness may be a bit too much for your daily driver, but Schroth offers their Quick Fit harnesses for certain specifc ftments, including Audi, BMW, Ford, MINI and Subaru applications.
