East Germany's Automobilwerk Eisenach produced the Wartburg between 1956 and 1965. Call it a continuation of a prewar BMW. Not surprisingly, few made it to our shores. One, somehow, wound up in the hands of the braintrust behind the 24 Hours of LeMons. They offered a bounty: This car would go to the most deserving soul, and he or she would receive no penalty laps. Jim Thwaite, a man with several odd creations already to his credit, penned the winning argument. Jim and his Misft Toys Racing crew revived the Wartburg, in the process converting the front-drive, two-stroke sedan to a rear- engine, Subaru-powered freak show.
