Grassroots Motorsports 178 disaster struck both cars: One had a problem when the crew tried to remove a wheel nut that wouldn't come off, and the other had trans- mission issues. Among those making an early exit was the second-fastest qualifer, the No. 1 Extreme Speed Tequila Patron Honda HPD ARX, which Ryan Dalziel drove to an early lead. Its sister car, No. 2, started eighth and also retired early. No. 1 had steering problems, and No. 2 lost engine turbo boost. Also out early after a crash was the No. 60 Honda HPD Ligier JS P2 of Michael Shank Racing, which qualifed fourth. Both Mazda SKYACTIV diesel Pro- totypes fell out long before the end, earning 38th and 39th place: One had a broken drive belt, the other overheating issues. The innovative DeltaWing had problems all day until a broken suspension fnally sent the team to the paddock for good. The race saw multiple incidents, but the scariest moment occurred on pit road. Two Prototype cars running side by side collided, sending one into Kevin Fox, a crewman for the Fifty Plus Racing Riley BMW Prototype. Fox went fying, landing hard on the concrete, but was able to walk to the ambulance. He was evaluated and released at the onsite hospital. Also making a quick trip to the track 's care center was Oliver Gavin, who crashed the No. 4 GTLM Chevrolet Corvette C7.R with about 2 hours to go. He was evalu- ated and released. Alex Job says that the rest of the season will be interesting for all involved, since IMSA has an ever- improving handle on getting the Balance of Performance to actually equalize performance. His plans for next year are not entirely set: He's expecting another two-car effort, but with the GTD class going to the global GT3 specs, he isn't sure what he'll be running. He hasn't even seen the latest version of the Porsche GT3. "But we plan to be back at Sebring," he said. "Getting number 11 would be wonderful."
