G enuine, wheel-to-wheel road racing: Gearheads have dreamt about it for generations. Generally speak- ing, though, fulflling that dream has taken cash–and lots of it. Lately, low-buck endurance racing has helped scratch that itch for less coin. A greatly simplifed classing structure and cost caps have made the sport more accessible than ever. Could our $500 Miata be a viable entrant in that world? Sure, why not? Before we could go wheel to wheel, though, we needed to install one major piece of safety equipment: a full roll cage. While it's possible to knit your own from scratch, we went with a pre-bent cage from MiataCage. We fgured this would drasti- cally cut our fabrication time and eliminate the need for trial and error. While this route would sidestep some of the heavy lifting, it would still require enough fabbing to give us pride of workmanship.
