Grassroots Motorsports 163 EVENTS: ENDURANCE RACING 24 Hours of LeMons Triple Play Serious fans know that it took a lot of LeMons races–86 to be exact–for a General Motors product to taste victory. But don't break out your old Roger Smith/UAW/bailout jokes just yet: 86 races probably sounds pretty good to Porsche fans, who were winless in LeMons until event number 104. And what of those high-tech, Autobahn-bred, all-wheel- drive machines with the four rings on the grill? To quote Judge Phil of the LeMons Supreme Court, "An Audi will never win a LeMons race." They sounded like good words to live by until Team Copyright Laws took the checkered fag at HPR in their 1993 Audi 90. Judge Phil didn't quite have to eat his words, however, since this was race number 117. And, at the same event, a 2000 A4 came in dead last, behind a 1950 Dodge pickup. LeMons legend Jeff "Speedycop" Bloch has covered a lot of genres in his crap- can career, including a Toyota-powered Cessna, a self-propelled camper trailer, and a fully functional Honda "Accordion" that works just like the instrument. Lately, he's been turning his creative energy toward incredibly accurate movie- car replicas, including a Jurassic Park-spec Ford Explorer and this Wagon Queen Family Truckster inspired by "National Lampoon's Vacation." Making its road racing debut at CMP, the Truckster showed some weak points–like race pads that quickly withered under the car's crushing weight–but the visual impact was well worth any performance drawbacks. Thunderhill Raceway's new 5-mile layout–quickly dubbed Thunderschleife by race nerds–had hosted an event or two before the hoopties showed up, but the staggering 216-car LeMons feld gave the track its true christening. If you're wondering what the record is for largest American endur- ance road race, so are LeMons fans. As of this writing, the paperwork from the event had already been submitted to Guinness for record certifcation. story by nick pon • photos as credited The B.F.E.
